A Naming Ceremony
Name giving ceremonies have a history almost as old as the human race. In Ancient Roman times a son was not a legal member of the family until his father named him in a name giving ceremony. This ritual differs from a christening, which is conducted by an authorised member of a church and welcomes a new member into the church.
A Naming is a civil or secular ceremony and can be used to acknowledge and welcome a new baby to your family, unite step or adopted children within a family, or when recognising an adult name change. These days a baby naming ceremony also offers an opportunity to welcome a child into the family and the world, to remind us all of the great responsibility involved in bringing up a child, and to recognise and appoint those who will have an important role in the child’s development, usually called godparents, or mentors.
A Naming ceremony can take place at home, in a park or any special place you choose. It is often held as part of a special birthday, family event or sometimes included in a wedding ceremony. There are lots of ways you can personalise a naming ceremony and involve your family members if you want. You can use candles, music, ribbons, release balloons, include a wishing bowl, or wish cards and include grandparents, god parents and other special family and friends.
We can meet to discuss and plan the ceremony details and I will explain some of the rituals to you, or help you design a ritual that is personal and meaningful for your family. Commemorative certificates are provided for your child, the godparents and any others you choose to include.
