Leanne Smith Civil Marriage Celebrant
A Wedding Ceremony
On 9 December 2017, the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Act 2017 commenced. The Act changes the definition of marriage and provides for marriage equality in Australia. The right to marry in Australia is no longer determined by sex or gender.
You can book your ceremony for any day of the week, at any time of the day or evening, at any venue you choose. When you are ready to start organising your wedding you will need to:
You will also need to provide to your celebrant with evidence of your date and place of birth (an original official birth certificate, extract of birth entry or an Australian or overseas passport), evidence of your identity (a driver's licence, proof of age/photo card, or an Australian or overseas passport) and evidence of the termination of any previous marriage, if applicable. If you are unable to provide an overseas birth certificate or passport you can complete a Statutory Declaration setting out the reasons why this is the case.
You can write your own vows- there are some legally required words which must be included, but apart from that you can both choose any wording for vows that you wish. I am happy to assist with writing your vows.
There are almost endless ideas and opportunities for including meaningful ritual in your ceremony and for having family and friends participate if you wish. Readings, songs, sand ceremony, ring warming, wine ceremony, rose ceremony, hand-fasting are just a few ideas. During your appointment with your celebrant you can plan your ceremony just the way you want it to be. I am always available for discussion around your ideas and encourage you to have a rehearsal before the day of your wedding, to make sure you are happy with your plans.
